This book contains a lucid translation of three works by Sri Shankara Bhagavatpadacharya—Nirvana Manjari, Nirvana Shatkam, and Svarupanusandhana Ashtakam—rendered by the esteemed scholar and writer Sri Jnanananda Bharathi Swamigal, a devoted follower of the Jagadgurus of Sri Sharada Peetham, Sringeri. In Nirvana Manjari, Sri Shankara Bhagavatpadacharya elucidates the true nature of the Self in twelve stanzas. He explains that the modifications and experiences are limited to the body and obscure the true essence of the Self, which is all-pervasive, transcendental, and the source, substratum, and substance of all effects. The Self is the illuminator and primary cause of all phenomena. In its cosmic aspect, the entire world is but a fraction of the cosmic Self. Nirvana Shatkam outlines the method of introspective self-analysis, guiding one to eliminate all non-Self elements and realize the Pure Self. Sri Shankara Bhagavatpadacharya emphasizes that the Self is unrelated to the illusory effects of Maya or the attributes commonly associated with it in the empirical world. He asserts in Nirvana Shatkam that for the Supreme Self, there is neither freedom nor bondage. In Svarupanusandhana Ashtakam, consisting of eight stanzas, Sri Shankara Bhagavatpadacharya discusses the prerequisites for realization. These include mental discipline and purification, seeking guidance from a teacher, meditating on their teachings, and realizing that the Self is characterized by existence, consciousness, bliss, and absoluteness.
